Foot Reflexology
Reflexology is a therapy based on the principle that the feet (as well as the hands, face and ears) have reflex points that correspond with specific muscle groups or organs or bones in the body. In this system, the nerve endings in the extremities provide a “map” of the rest of the body. Through the application of pressure on particular areas of the feet, reflexology is said to promote many health benefits. The therapist stimulates the nervous system to do the work of balancing the whole body which releases tension and pain.

The History of Reflexology
Although evidence shows the beginning of reflexology was practiced as far back as 1,000 BC in China, William Fitzgerald, MD, is considered the father of modern reflexology. In 1917, Dr. Fitzgerald wrote about the 10 vertical zones that extend the body length. Dr. Shelby Riley then developed the horizontal zones. Eunice Ingham developed reflexology charts in the 1930s which are still used today. In 1957, Dr. Paul Nogier recorded the ear reflex map.
Eunice Ingham (seen in adjacent photo) is still known as the pioneer of modern reflexology. After extensive research, she developed the map of the entire body on the feet – where one point on the foot corresponds to a certain part of the body. By using acupressure on these points, a positive effect is created in the corresponding body part. Eunice Ingham spent 30 years traveling around America teaching her Reflexology first to medial staff and then to non-medical practitioners. She wrote 2 books, “Stories the Feet Can Tell” (1938) and “Stories the Feet Have Told(1953). She died in 1974 at the age of 85 still thoroughly convinced that Reflexology could aid in easing the suffering of mankind. She was on the road with that message until the age of 80.
